URGENT FROM FROM AOPA
Tuesday, September 15, 2009 at 6:43PM This week, Congress will hold a hearing to discuss last month’s fatal Midair collision over New York’s Hudson River, and the potential for airspace restrictions that could negatively change the way GA navigates in and around major metropolitan areas. Once again, some New York area officials have called for draconian regulations that would essentially shut down general aviation access to this airspace and have even referred to the airspace as the Wild West. We know it is not the Wild West and we cannot allow the airspace to be shut down. AOPA President Craig Fuller will be there to testify, but we must do more. We need your help.
A few weeks ago, the FAA convened an FAA working group that included AOPA to assess safety measures in the Hudson and come up with sensible recommendations for improvements. FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt acted swiftly to accept all recommendations of the group and has directed their implementation.
The new rules would mandate current best practices—such as flying with lights on, two-way air-to-air communication, separation of fixed wing and rotor aircraft at different altitudes; and for developing flight rules and training for operations in the exclusion zone. Most important, it keeps the corridor open for general aviation traffic.
Your Member of Congress sits on the important committee that will hold this hearing! It is important to you and your fellow pilots that your Congressman or woman hears from you.
